I was playing around in KPT and came up with something that looked like a furball to me and that's how this teddy bear came to be. This tutorial was written for PSP 7. You will need this zip file which contains the furball tubes and the selections for the teddy bear. You will need to load the tubes in your PSP tube file and the selections into your PSP selection file. This is the color palette. Right click and save to your hard drive.
1. Open your color palette. Open a new transparent image 400 X 400. Make a new layer named "ears" and load the "ears.sel". Flood fill with the dark brown. Select/none. 2. Get your tube tool and choose the tube "furball 3". Set the tube at a scale of 24 and step of 51. Go around the edges of the ears trying to keep your placement about the same so he has a well rounded edge not a lumpy one. Be sure you are letting the fur hang out from the edges so your teddy looks furry. I do each ball with a separate click rather that a solid line of tubes. I think it gives a nice effect and he doesn't look like he has a garden hose of fur. After you have the edges done fill in the center randomly. If you don't like where a furball lands don't forget the best part of PSP ... UNDO. 3. After you have filled in with furball 3 go back to your picture tubes and choose furball 5. You will need to set your scale each time you change tubes. Do a few randomly around with this tube. This gives him a furrier effect. Not all of his fur is laying the same direction or the highlights in the same place.
4. Optional: I like to make my bear look more round so I do this optional step. You don't have to do this. Even without this step you will have a furry beary. Go to select/all, select float, select invert. Then go to effects/3d effects/drop shadow and apply this shadow.
5. Make a new layer named "inner ear" and load the "inner ear.sel". 6. Flood fill with the gold color. Select/none. Use the "gold furball" tube and fill in and then the "gold furball 2" to do randomly. 7. Optional shadow as in step 4. 8. Make a new layer named "head". Load the "head.sel" selection. Flood fill with the dark brown. Select/none. Again, use the furball 3 to fill in and then use furball 5 randomly. 9. Optional shadow as in step 4. 10. There needs to be some separation between his head and his ears. We don't want the shadow all around his head because then we couldn't tube him so make your ear layer active and add a new layer naming it "head shading". 11. It's hard to tell where his head ends and his ears begin so lower the opacity of the ear layer to about 75. 12. Get your paintbrush with these settings and paint just over the ears behind the head like the example below and then go to effects/blur/gaussian blur and give it a blur of 6.00.
Now he looks better, huh? Are you saving your work? 13. Activate your ears layer and add a new layer named "body". Load the "body.sel" selection and fill with the dark brown color. Select/none. 14. Again, use the furball 3 tube and then the furball 5 tube. 15. Optional shadow as in step 4. 16. With the body layer active, add a new layer. Name this layer "chin shading". Get your paintbrush and paint just under his head like we did in step 12. Again, give it a gaussian blur of 6.00. 17. With the body layer active, make a new layer called "belly middle". Load the "belly middle.sel" selection. Flood fill with the gold color. Select/none. Use the furball gold tube to go around the edges and fill in. Then use the furball gold 2 tube randomly. 18. Optional shadow as in step 4. 19. Add a new layer naming it "arms". Load the "arms.sel" selection. Flood fill with the dark brown color. Select/none. Again, go around the edges and fill in with furball 3 and randomly with furball 5 tube. 20. Optional shadow as in step 4. 21. With your body layer active, make a new layer calling it "leg" and load the "leg.sel" selection. Flood fill with the dark brown. Select/none. Use the furball 3 to fill and then the furball 5. 22. Optional shadow as in step 4. 23. Make a new layer naming it "foot". Load the "foot.sel" selection. Flood fill with the dark brown. Select/none. Fill with furball tubes 3 and 5. 24. Lower the opacity of the "leg" layer. Now we can see where the foot ends. Make a new layer naming it "foot shading" and using the paintbrush, paint in black, like we did before for shading, and then gaussian blur 6.00. 25. Make a new layer above the foot layer naming it "foot pads". There is no selection for the foot pad. I think you can "wing" this one. Use the gold furball and the gold furball 2 tube to give him a pad. 26. Optional shadow as in step 4. 27. Now you can turn off all layers except the leg, foot, foot shading and foot pads layer and merge these visible layers. Then duplicate layer and mirror. Or you can duplicate and mirror each layer individually. 28. Now make a new layer UNDER the arms layer and paint black with the paintbrush and do a gaussian blur of 6.00. 29. Make your head layer active and add a new layer naming it "snout". Load the "snout.sel" selection. Flood fill with the gold color. Select/none. 30. Use the gold furball tube to fill in. 31. Optional shadow as in step 5. 32. Make a new layer naming it "eye". With your draw tool draw a small black circle for his eye. 33. Do an inner bevel on his eye with the following settings:
34. Do a drop shadow on his eye with the following settings:
35. Duplicate layer and mirror. 36. Make a new layer for his nose. With your preset shapes draw a black triangle. Flip the image and move it into place. 37. Do the same bevel as on his eye and the same drop shadow. 38. With your draw tool, line width of 2, draw a line from his nose to where his mouth will be. 38. Make a new layer and give him a mouth. 39. Decorate him how ever you wish. That's it you're done.
